Artists Begin Using Data to Track Rents, Audience Satisfaction

Artists have been increasing their focus on data, to do everything from track the rent a performing-arts group pays for space to the satisfaction levels of audience members. A recent panel at the Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in Chelsea, discussed the appealing nature of the data and how it can help arts groups market, build communities and increase their advocacy efforts. While first entering data can be a daunting task, the experts encouraged artists to stick with it in order to experience the benefits, including negotiating lower rents and growing their audiences.

Today's tax day! Get excited, people! Just kidding. Everyone hates paying taxes, we know. But at least this year, tax day comes hand in hand with a superb infographic. And not just any infographic; rather, the grand-prize, $5,000 winner of the inaugural Data Viz Challenge, run by Eyebeam with sponsorship from Google (and which we helped judge).


In partnership with Google, New York art and technology center Eyebeam has launched a contest to find the best data visualization of taxes.

The Data Viz Challenge, as it’s called, asks designers and developers to use data from WhatWePayFor.com and create an infographic that shows how these tax dollars are spent.

The winner will receive US$5,000 and coverage on various websites.

Entries will be judged for their clarity, relevance, utility, aesthetics, and how well they can tell a “persuasive story”, Eyebeam said in a statement. The judges include Google’s Aaron Koblin, Fast Co Design editor Cliff Kuang and New Media professor Brooke Singer, among others.

Submissions are due 27 March and winners will be announced on 18 April, Tax Day.


Taxes are probably one of the most stressful and depressing times of year, am I right? In an attempt to gleam a bit of useful and, dare I say, Interesting information from the annual mundane task, Google has partnered up with Eyebeam to create the “Data Viz Challenge”


Google Offers $5,000 for Best Tax Infographic


Google has thrown its support behind a contest that searches for ways to map out the U.S. government's esoteric spending patterns. Called "Data Viz Challenge," the contest has been assembled by the Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, a digital-arts collective headquartered a stone's throw from Google's Manhattan satellite office, and promises $5,000 to the entrant who can best "visualize how your individual federal income taxes are spent."
